The Session:

Another session at my local pier but this one turned out to be very short due to arriving late and running out of bait.

I was delayed because of bad traffic so when I arrived I was running short of time to fish the lower pier. I set up the LRF rod first and had a few goes with that using white, brown and red iSome worm. I only had a few rattles and didn't hook anything over the first 20 minutes so I set up a float rod and dropped it close in at around 15 feet deep with a mackerel strip on. This was not producing many bites either and I struggled to hook anything on this rod aswell.

Lawrence from Ilfracombe Aquarium joined me and had a go with the LRF rod for a bit but didn't go very well either. When he went i had around half of my mackerel left and had caught a few Pollock but the bites became harder to see and in the end I was checking the bait within a minute or two of it being in the water and found my hook to be almost entirely stripped of bait, but there was no indication of a bite.

Then I could see small Sand Smelt swimming around near the surface and as I dropped the bait down, holding it so I could still see it I could see the fish picking the bait off at speed. the rest of my mackerel was used up very quickly and I packed up much earlier that I had planned but determined to give it another go at the end of the week.
