The Session:

I returned to Putsbourough with more crab than yesterday hoping that I could catch more Smoothounds and maybe also a Ray tonight. I fished the same baits and tackle as yesterday but a difference tonight was that the waves were bigger and they were breaking further back and were messy. I was not able to wade out as far as I was yesterday and felt I wasn't getting the baits as far as I'd have liked, thought it may not have been ,much shorter distances than yesterday, maybe 60 yards from where I waded out to.

Both rod tips were bending down gently and straightening back up almost constantly and I found out why quite quickly. I reeled in a spide crab on the crab rod. Once it was recast the rod tip did the same thing and I struck both rods just in case but each time the bait had clearly been had by crabs. I felt some on the end for most of a retrieve but the fell off and on one cast I brought two back, one was hanging on to my line as far back as the shock leader which gave me more reason to beleive that maybe yesterday the cast where I lost the entire rig and leader was indeed done by a crab.

There were others fishing theis beach tonight and they had walked far over to the middle of the beach. I considered moving a hundred yards or so to see if it made any difference but soon decided to get the bait back in the freezer before it defrosted. I had 10 peeler crab with me and 4 crab cart wings as well as one and a half packs of launce so it would be a lot to waste. When I had got back to my car and loaded it up I looked down the beach and the other anglers looked like they were still fishing so maybe they were catching fish.

It goes to show how much of a difference there can be over a couple of tides. Maybe two days agao there were even more Smoothhounds there and less crabs and I'd have had a bumber session if I could have fished then.
