The Session:
Bob had wanted to fish the Stone Pier in Weymouth and I was on holiday in the area so we agreed to meet up and do some light fishing on the stone pier in Weymouth. Bob was already there when I arrived. I made my arrival at the pier later than it needed to be by parking in the first part of Nothe Car Park and as I left the car with my riucksack and rods I discovered the car park went on further towards the fort than I thought it did and there were plenty of spaces available there so I could have cut my walking down by around 10 minutes.
I chose to walk right up to the tunnel entrance to the fort then use the steps to the left to get down to the pathway that led to the pier. I stopped at the waterside Cafe and looked at the prices and food that was on offer. It seemed a little expensive but I'd come back there to buy something if I got through the food I'd brought with me early.
Bob was set up on a seat on the left hand side of the pier. He had already had a few fish and was getting bites and fish as I was setting up which gave me hope that I'd have at least one productive day for the week after disappointing sessions so far.
Once I was set up I looked over the railings and could see the rocks and weed under the water. Once I dropped my 7g dropshot weight just inches from the stone edging I discovered it was deeper than it looked. Barely a few seconds passed before my rod tip trembled as one of the fish down there eagerly took the bait. Unfortunately I threw away the benefit of being able to catch a fish from the very first cast by missing the bite and finding the bait gone when I reeled in to check it. another couple of drop downs of the weight though and I hooked a fish which was a very small Corkwing Wrasse. Bob had a few more fish during this time.
I was impressed at how many bites we were getting just in this one spot and how quickly the fish were taking the bait after dropping the weight down. I was probably missing around 4 in 5 bites though and occasional fish were shaking the hook as they came to the surface so my catch rate was quite low, not that that would matter by the end of the day. Over the first half an hour I had several fish and was not really prepared for the number of Corkwing Wrasse that were to make an appearance. I also had some tiny and beautifully marked Pouting and it is also only at the time of writing this report that I've noticed I had a Goldsinny Wrasse as one of my first few fish, which I mistook for a small Ballan on the day.
The float rod wasn't set up yet and as I thought what possibilities there could be for fish on a larger bait and hook I quickly set it up and dropped it a few yards out set at around 6 feet deep and left the rod leaning against the railings whicl I also took out my prawn trap and put some squid, mackerel and sandeel in that I hadn't used up fully in the previous sessions this week. I put the prawn trap out several feet just down from where we were fishing and thought I'd leave it for an hour or so before checking what was in there. I went back to the LRF rod and watched the float rod as I fished but had to keep recasting the float due to a tow in the water pulling it to the right and closer to the edge. I had a few quick bites on the float rod but nothing I was able to strike at and eventually I stopped casting it out because it needed too much recasting for the amount of bites I saw on it.
During the day a group of young people turned up with a rod and asked me and Bob for some advice on fishing, it was mainly Bob who helped them learn what to do with the rod and reel they'd just bought but I gave some aswell and as they weren't doing well with what they had I made up a LRF rig and gave them a bit of Ragworm and eventually they had one or two fish which was good to see.
I focused on the LRF rod for the vast majority of the rest of the day and continued to have Corkwing Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse and Pouting, with the Wrasse having some of the most vibrant colours I've seen in the species. Bob was outcatching me possibly by 2 to one and going by how he has done each of the few LRF sessions we've fished together it's from just knowing exactly what to do, how much bait to use, when to lift into the fish and what size hooks to use. It wouldn't surprise me if he knows there is a specific speed you need to lower the bait through the water to get the fish taking that bit sooner. I stopped occasionally to eat my food and to keep drinking enough fluids on this hot day.
I went to check the prawn trap two times over around as many hours. The first time the trap contained just the bait still and the second time I found the cord had come away from the trap. I knew I checked the knot I had tied to ensure it was tight and had not had this happen before but either I didn't check it as well, or the cord was damaged somewhere. One thing I noticed was the cord, which was made up of several strands platted together had all the strands at the end separated for about a foot but when I tied the cord to the trap they were all platted to the end. They had to be because I passed the cord through the hexagons in the net which I wouldn't have been able to do in the state they were now in. I looked in the wtare but couldn't see the trap so maybe it had drifted in the tow. or it was between rocks somewhere I couldn't see it.
Feeling quite annoyed with myself and almost tempted to put a few weights and hooks on a line and dragging them around close in but feeling that I;d only get snagged and end up losing those I opted to just accept the loss and just get back to the LRF and going for a big tally of small fish.
I had plenty of fish by around 3pm and popped to the cafe toilet and grabbed something to eat from there as I had finished all the food I brought with me and Bob was very kind to hang around with the tackle while I waited around 30 minutes for the cafe to make me the burger and chips I ordered before he packed up and left for home shortly after I got back fishing. I didn't notice the sign that they cook to order and at first thought the 30 minutes a bit excessive to cook a burger and when I realised the lot was going to cost over £11 I thought it had better be worth it, and when I tried it I discovered why. It was the best burger I'd ever tasted, prepared perfectly. The chips were good too but I've had better and to be fair to the cafe I was probably so keen to get back to fishing once the burger had filled me up I wasn't interested in the chips much after, so on another day I might rate those just as highly as the burger.
As Bob was still just in sight I brought in a Rock Goby. Bob had some Blennies as well as the Wrasse Species and Pouting today but I think he never had a Goby. Not the most valued fish but he might have liked to have had the extra species to his tally for the day. After that I decided to try another spot as I was already happy with what I'd had so I moved to the other side and to very near the end of the pier.
I put the float out again here and found it drifted to the left and around the end of the pier so I moved there and left it several yards out with the tow causing moving the float and bait around. I set it around 20 feet deep here. Dropping down the LRF rod weight resulted in a few Pouting from here in half an hour and as I wanted some more Wrasse I moved back along the side a few yards and soon began catching Wrasse again.
While watching the float I saw a school of what I presume was large Mullet swim around the corner of the pier about 20 yards out. They went straight past my float. I reeled it in and set it shallower at around 8 feet deep. Soon after another shoal swam past, fish the same size swimming in the same direction. I realised my float was too deep so I changed it again to around 4 feet. Just one other shoal of 3 or 4 fish swam past afater that, again in the same direction but they showed no interest in the bait. I then just left the float out and continued to bring in the small Wrasse and also managed another Goldsinny before packing up after learning my friends had returned to the caravan after a day out at Portland. Just as I was packing up another angler arrived and asked me how I had done and we had a brief conversation before I wished him luck with his fishing. Bob later told me it was an angler from a fishing forum we all go on. My lack of ability to recognise faces meant I didn't click as to who he was (Si-fly from WSF).
When I got back to the caravan I found that my legs were quite burned. I had taken Jeans with me and intended to change into them after being in the sun for a few hours but forgot and spent the whole day wearing shorts. It just goes to show how much fishing can be distracting and make the time fly.
