The Session: Due to poor weather on holiday this was a case of trying two sessions on the one day it looked ok to fish. I fished with a couple of friends. The first was Berry Head and the setup was a float set at around 8ft deep baited with ragworm and mackerel strips and cast a few yards out. No bites came all session and the float drifted quite quickly in the tow to the right making casting feel constant. Due to seeing mackerel being caught I gave the mackerel flashers a go and only managed one mackerel. It looked like a couple of seals might have been keeping most fish away as they patrolled the shoreline and kept stopping in front of us, showing no fear or real concern for the line of fishermen on the bank. So it was off for a break before trying the breakwater in the evening. A walk to the arm on the left of the breakwater and setting up opposite it. Ledger rods baited with mackerel segments and ragworm cast at 50 to 60 yards, a float rod baited with ragworm and mackerel strips, cast around 10 to 20 yards and a final try with the mackerel flashers again resulted in just another single mackerel before I spotted another seal near the end of the breakwater which made a couple of anglers there move much further back down. It was this seal, the fairly fast tow on the water and the weather being windier and colder than anticipated that ended the session earlier than planned. I thought it would have been easier going but not too disappointed as the holiday was enjoyed nonetheless.
