The Session:

I returned to Burnham On Sea this time to fish with Bob and we both wanted a late Cod and a Ray, or some flatfish. When we arrived we took a look at the beach to see that no other anglers were there yet. We were quite early so we had plenty of time to set up.

Once we fetched out tackle and began to look at the beach more closely to get an idea of the depth of the mud we noticed that the mud covered a greater area than when we had both fished last. On this beach there are small areas of stones near the wall steps and one area stretches out across the sand a bit, last time there was plenty of sand around these stones and for several yards to the left but it looked like nearly all mud down to the waterline.

So we set up someway along the steps in two areas where the steps were free of weed and there were few stones in the sand at the bottom. Some of the steps can even be slippy despite looking free of weed so I made sure later on that I checked if any were around where I would be just in case I needed to step into the water when it had reached the steps.

Once we had set up we noticed that the water still looked quite far away and we both checked the mud in front of us and decided not to risk walking out over it too far to cast out due to the varying depth and it being quite slippy. We were visited by someone who was interested in what we thought we might catch and said he might haev a go here another day as he hadn't realised it would produce the fish we were after.

We kept looking ot at the water and it still didn't look like it was getting nearer. We also checked the wind forecast and decided the wind was not coming from the direction the forecast was stating and it was definitely stronger at this time too. At one point it blew over my tripod. Eventually, after noting we were getting close to only an hour and a half fishing until high tide I decided to walk out on to the mud a bit, expecting to slip over at any moment, and I managed to give the first rod a good overhead punch and was pleasantly pleased when we saw it go over the water and land 10-20 yards out. It would be covered in water in no time now so that was fine for the first cast. I did the same with the other rod. That was one baited with Squid and one with crab cart.

I think it is safe to say we were both hopeful of catching something and so we recast regularly and once we werepushed back on to the steps we both tried casting short and long to find a fish. Even because of the late bite I had last time I remained hopeful of a late one again and even tried wading out a few yards at one point to see if I could get a few extra yards. I didn't try that again though because the waves were a bit bigger than they looked and once I had stepped off the bottom step the water was up to the bottom of my flotation suit coat.

We failed to notice any bites and I only had a couple of casts where the bait might have been nibbled at by a fish but otherwise every cast came back with the bait as it went out. We packed up after having a couple of last casts from the sand again a bit disappointed but we said we would like to give it a go in the warmer months to see if it fished any better.
