The Session:

I went for a ledgering session from my local pier hoping to at least get one Ray and maybe some other species. I set up the ledger rods first and due to the lack of wind I was able to cast the one baited with Sandeel around 80 yards and the one baited with Peeler Crab around 70 yards. I then set up a float rod to try for the usual Pollock to keep me busy if the ledger rods didn't produce much. I dropped the float by the side of the pier at around 16 feet deep. Finally I put out a prawn trap with some old squid and mackerel in to see what that might attract.

There were other anglers there and oen of them caught a small wrasse on ragworm but apart from that the rest of us barely had a bite. I began trying squid and mackerel on one of my ledger rods and I checked the prawn trap every so often. The only fish I had were a tiny Pollock, Pouting and Poorcod along with a Goby and a few retieves later another small Pouting, all in the prawn trap along with a fairly large Velvet swimming crab. Other than that I had no bites at all on the ledger rods of float rod.

I gave it around 5 hours as other anglers came and went and one or two also stuck it out because they were on holiday and determined to catch something. I passed on my remaining squid to one angler who appeared to be beginning to get bites as I was leaving.
