The Session: I made a last minute decision to go out fishing and decided on my local pier. I set up on the upper section because the tide was going to be big and probably washing over the top at some point.

First I set up my usual ledger rods, a pulley rig baited with launce and cast around 80 yards to my left and a flapper rig baited with lugworm cast around 40 yards straight ahead. I had a few casts of these and then because the wind died down a bit I decided to set up a float rod and try some squid fished near the edge about 20 foot deep. A bit later I also set up a running ledger with half of a whiting on and dropped it in close, before finally dropping a prawn trap over the edge to see what would venture in there. I put a load of old squid and sandeel in the main compartment of the trap.

The session was pretty much uneventful with just one bite on my ledger rod, which resulted in a pollock. Actually I could have had more bites because my hooks did come back with no bait on a lot but nothing registered on the rod tips so I put it down to very small fish, or crabs.

I lifted the prawn trap a few times and in total I had four hermit crabs, a couple of velvet swimming crabs, a small poorcod, two prawns and two edible crabs. Later on in the session I moved along the pier as the tide went out but I still had no noticable bites. I fished as long as I could and left with another rather poor session from this pier. Maybe by the end of the year I will have a good one, just like I was having earlier in the year.
