The Session: The beach was uneven due to the strong tide moving sand around as it went out. It was difficult walking to the spot I wanted to fish, which was around 400 yards to the right of the beach, I set up both rods and cast them both as far as I could into the dark, one baited with sandeel and the other with squid. The tide was washinng sand away from under my feet and there were plenty of dips in the sand which caused me to get a wellie full of sea water and this happened a few times as it was difficult to judge where to walk. It was nearly 2 hours before I had a bite and I was just wondering if I was casting far enough when the tip of the rod baited with sandeel pulled down briefly and then again after a few seconds. It was clear the fish was holding the bait so I struck and felt it on the end. It took me about 5 minutes to bring in and I was pleased to see a nice sized small-eyed ray in the surf. I had no more bites until an hour later when several soft pulls on the rod tip of the sandeel bait again looked good enough to strike at and I reeled in a small bass. No more bites came until around 2 o'clock when the rod baited with squid showed a strong pull downwards. I immediately lifted the rod and felt something big on the end. Unfortunately after a fight of about a minute it came off and I rebaited and had one last cast, deciding to pack up because the water in my wellies was becoming cold and uncomfortable.
