The Session: I walked to the right hand side of the beach until I was at the shoreline in between the three last houses behind me. I set up both rods and cast them quite far so they would have plenty of time in the water while the tide was receding. It wasn't too long before the flapper rig produced a bite which I sucessfully hooked and landed a nice bass. Having only been fishing for half an hour I was very hopeful for the rest of the session. It had taken the lugworm. Less than 20 minutes later the rod tip of this rod went again and again I hooked the fish but it didn't feel like it until I saw on the edge of the water an unfamiliar shaped fish wriggling as I pulled it. When it got closer I saw it was a baby smoothound that took a liking to the lugworm aswell. This was looking now to be an interesting session. Half an hour later the other rod showed a bite and it was no surprise that a dogfish had taken my mackerel bait. It was time to move forward a bit and so I did and recast again as far as I could. Not much happened after this. I had the occasional movement on each rod tip that suggested a fish had touched the bait but nothing more than that. When the tide turned my pulley rig came back tangled on each cast, which could have been putting the fish off bothering to have a go at the bait. The flapper rigs hooklengths would come back twisted too and there was probably only one cast where it didn't twist, and a whiting took a liking to the lugworm and became my last catch of the evening. it was almost midnight. 45 minutes more went without a bite and one cast of my flapper rig cost me a rig and leader as the line tangled on the cast and snapped. I decided to tie another rig while I was there and then pack up to get sleep so I would be good to go fishing again later this day.
