The Session:
After not doing as well as I hoped in my previous session here nor with the float fishing session at Portland I wanted to get back here and try again for a big ger fish.
I arrived after 8pm and was surprised to see no-one fishing within view. I walked straight down the shingle and set up around the same place as I did before. I had to walk back to my car 3 times because there were bits of tackle I forgot to transfer from the rucksack I took out earlier back to my seat box.
It's quite tiring walking over that shingle back that many times.
So once I was finally set up with the first ledger rod I cast it and was fairly pleased to see it go about 70 yards or more. It made that satisfying splash as the weight entered the water almost vertically. As with the previous day it was baited with king ragworm. I then followed with the other rod baited at first with a whole Launce. Due to the lack of any flow or surf I was able to use plain 4-5 oz lead weights again.
My friends arrived not long after I started fishing and Steve gave lure fishing ago, trying first with a plug and then trying with a Wedge. At around half past nine he called over saying he had hooked something and after what seemed like a very long fight he brought in a Mackerel which just managed to wriggle back into the water as he went to unhook it. I think I was as pleased to see him catch a fish as I would have been myself. That said I was feathing not far from him but never had a take. Half an hour later he had another Mackerel and this one was a nice size, just over 1lb. It was fairly dark now so it was interesting to see them taking something in such low light.
I remained fishless though onboth the feathers and the ledger rods. After dark the flapper rig rod showed signs of a bite. I missed it, recast and missed the next one. My friends were just going back to the caravan by then so they didn't see me catch any fish, and if they had seen me get the first ones, they probably wouldn't have been very impressed.
I managed to hook one soon after they had gone. A small Pouting had taken the ragworm. I wondered how many of these I might experience before a bigger fish had chance to get to the bait. On the next cast I had a double hook up of two even smaller Pouting and then finally the big bait rod, still with Launce on showed a bite, which I left to develop a minute or two before striking and a Dogfish came to the shore quite easily in the calm sea.
The flapper rig rod tip was shaking around by the time I returned the Dogfish and I left it until the bite seemed to have stopped, reeled in and again had a double hook up but this time one of the fish was a small Conger Eel. this was followed on the same rod 10 minutes later by a very slightly bigger Conger Eel. After I put that back I saw the tip of the other rod gently bending down and going back straight again and I first thought it might be a Ray but then realised it would actually be a Spider Crab and as soon as I pulled the rod up to reel in I felt the dead weight which confirmed my second thought. Another couple of missed bites later I had another Pouting and another which as I was running low on Ragworm now and I had used the last of a pack of Launce I decided to pack up. I probably should have sat it out longer but I was feeling more tired than I expected which I think was down to the caravan beds not being very comfortable to sleep in. I still had 3 days to come back if I felt like it, to try for a big fish again.
