The Session: This was my first visit to this mark and I was going to go on the bank holiday Monday but as I wasn''t sure I would be able to I decided to go and fish before the forecast bad weather arrived.

I walked a few hundred yards along the beach after accessing it via the wooden bridge and set up two ledger rods with pulley rigs to start with. One was baited with a crab and the other a sandeel. I cast them both about 70 yards out and waited around 15 minutes before checking the baits just in case there were crabs around. The baits both came back untouched so I left the next ones out longer, and began switching between the three large baits I had. It was squid that attracted bites but it seemed that no matter if I reached for the rod immediately, or left it for a while before reaching when the pulls seemed to not be stopping, they did stop the moment my hand touched the rod. The condition of the squid when I reeled in each time was between barely touched to half gone so I wasn''t sure what it would be but suspected Pouting.

After an hour and a half I had a bite on the other rod when it had sandeel on. It was pulling the tip steadiyl over and sometimes shaking it. I managed to hook it and it was a small Pouting. I noticed it had one eye which was very large and looked swollen. I continued to fish for an hour or more before, missing more bites on squid before changing one rod to a flapper rig and baited it with a couple of ragworm. It wasn''t long before something began taking the ragworm and as I thought, it was Pouting. I hooked two on the first cast but missed the rest except one because the bites were very quick. I had found out what they were anyway and so I switched back to a pulley rig as I was after larger fish today.

Unfortunately that was all the action for the session. I''d clearly picked the wrong day and my baits continued to come back in staes ranging from untouched to almost completely gone and sometimes without me noticing a bite. Once 5am came around the wind suddenly began and I took down my beach shelter because with the wind coming head on it was not much use. I gave it two more hours and began packing up just after 7am, disappointed at the lack of fish but glad I gave another new mark a go.
