The Session: I fished my local pier over high tide expecting to catch dogfish, whiting and pouting and I began on the upper pier which I fished until a couple of hours after high tide and then moved to the lower pier.

I set up a pulley rig and a 2 hook flapper and while I was on the upper pier I cast the flapper rig about 20 yards out and the pulley rig around 70 yards. It took a long time for me to get a bite and being the only one on the pier I didn''t know if it was just because the fish weren''t around at first.

After a couple of hours I began to get typical looking bites from either whiting or pouting and they were quick shakes of the rod tip. I couldn''t hook any for the first few but then had a small whiting. I continued to miss the few bites I had on the flapper rig before having a bite on the other rod and managing to hook a dogfish.

The next fish was another whiting but quite a bit bigger, touching 1lb but It was over half an hour after getting the dogfish when I caught it. Things were quite slow.

Once the lower pier was clear I move down and began casting both rods between 50 and 70 yards and not long after casting the pulley rig out I had a genlte bite which I was surprised to be a small Bull Huss. The only bite I had after was from a dogfish and I gave it another couple of hours before packing up.

It was quite a slow session but it was also the opposite state of the tide to what I usually fish so I was pleased to get a few.
