The Session: I met up with Chris again to try and catch a Ray from Putsborough beach. I was more hopeful this time because conditions were more comfortable. We didn''t go far along the beach before setting up. I had two pulley rigs set up with sandeel and squid to begin with. It was neccessary to wade fairly far out to try and get the bait just beyond the back breaker, which was around 70 yards out from where I waded to. Chris had arrived a little later than me and so after we set up we met to have a chat and while doing so I saw one of my rod tips bending down so I ran to it and struck immediately as the fish was still pulling it.

It was an expected dogfish and I thought it would be the first of many we would catch before getting a Ray but I was surprised when I returned to my tripod after recasting to see the tip of the other rod moving around. I expected another dogfish but the smaller weight indicated it was a bass and I reeled in a small one around the same size as the ones I caught the other week. Again once I had recast the other rod tip began moving and I struck and landed another Bass. I thought maybe we would get lots of them tonight and I walked over to Chris to let him know. He had already had Dogfish too so we were looking to be in for a busy session.

We both continued to catch dogfish with bites for me being quite sporadic. I don''t think I had any more Bass bites and maybe had one bite from a Conger Eel as my line was twisted when I reeled in. I had just 4 Dogfish from around 10 more bites and then Chris came over to tell me he caught a Ray, it was a nice size, nearly 7lb. At least one of us caught what we really came for. Chris had also had a small Conger Eel earlier on.

We fished for a bit longer before calling time, both quite tired and I certainly had lost any hope I''d get a Ray but as always at this mark, I enjoyed the session regardless of what I caught because this part of the beach is so peaceful at night when there is no wind.
