The Session: When I got out of the car I could hear constant sound of rolling waves which indicated long periods between each one but possibly being quite large.

I walked over to the right hand side of the beach and set up in front of the last few houses. Due to the large tide I set up both rods befor casting out and I had to move 60 paces to catch up with the sea as it had gone out that far in the 20 minutes it took me to set up.

I could see I would need to wade out at least 60 yards to get beyond the breakers with my cast and with my first rod I went carefully out until I was over knee high in water and watched to ensure no large wave was going to break while I was in mid-cast. As a small one broke just behind me I chose that moment to put the first bait around 70 yards which went well beyond the furthest swell I could see and I immediately began walking back to my tackle before the bait hit the water to ensure I was not caught out by another wave.

I repeated that with the second rod and as I was walking back to the tripod I noticed it moving around a bit and I went to adjust the head bar but then I realised I had a bite on the first rod already. The tip was moving around quite a bit so I struck but apart from the lead grip wires not collapsing I felt no resistance. I reeled in to find the squid chewed.

My hopes were up though, especially as I had experienced this before here, where I was fishing outside of the ''normal'' 2 down, 2 up fishing hours and I was getting bites immediately. It was short lived hope however as nothing else happened for over an hour.

After several casts of each rod, only really leaving them for 15 minutes each due to the fast receeding tide, I was contemplating bringing the squid bait back in while drinking tea, sure that by now it was pretty much in the white water. Then the rod tip bent down sharply a couple of times as a fish took the bait and most probably hooked itself then. I waited until the tip went again, it moved a little, but not enough to warrant striking at, then it moved more vigourously and I struck. Again I felt the grip lead hold firm and a long sustained pull and walk backwards got the spikes collapsed and I felt a fish on the end. As I reeled it in it gave a few pulls back that made me think it was bigger than it turned out to be but I was pleased nonetheless. If it was a sign that they were close in and willing to feed then it would be a good session from now on.

Almost half an hour later passed and again while drinking tea again, the tip on the same rod was pulled down a couple of times. I positioned myself ready to strike but there wasn''t enough movement that made me do so. After a couple of minutes of waiting I reeled in and found a smaller bass to be hooked. I put it back expecting a few more.

By now the sea had receeded out far enough to reveal the sand raising up in front of me so I could wade through water of a couple of feet before being in just an inch or two of water and then back into deeper water to cast. The sand was firm on this raised bit but in the bit I waded through it was soft and uneven. Eventually this area became completely exposed and looked like it was like it for some distance at least over to where two other anglers were fishing to my right.

The next bite looked like a dogfish bite but I also wondered if it could be a Ray. I hooked the fish after leaving the fish to take the bait for a few minutes and I was sure it was hooked when I was reeling in but as I reeled in over the now dry area of sand and then back into water I figured I was just experiencing the spikes dragging through the sand when my hook came back with just most of the bait on. When I rebaited and began walking to cast out I then saw a glint and something on the dry sand in front of me. It was a dogfish and it obviously fell off the hook as I was reeling it in so I did feel a fish when I struck.

It was almost low tide so I put the dogfish back in the pool in front of me so it could swim back into the sea when the tide began coming back in.

I continued to get bites, mostly on squid, which all looked like they were dogfish and some fell off on the retrieve, some I missed and I successfully landed 3 more with one on the sandeel bait. Just before I began packing up the other anglers there did and told me they had several dogfish.

With just a couple of squid and sandeel left I packed up and while doing so I remembered I had also brought some frozen lugworm which may have cuaght me some more bass.

The rod tip began moving again, this time in a way that indicated a dogfish, or possibly a Ray. After a few minutes I struck and while reeling in I was sure somthing was hooked
