The Session: I met up with another angler Chris at Putsborough beach. We expected to catch some Ray and Bass. I had set up both of my rods by sunset and went to wade out to be able to cast beyond the back breaker. The first thing I noticed was how the sea had created some quite deep and large dips in the sand, so walking out was a bit difficult.

Both baits went beyond the back breaker but only just and I intended to recast regularly to keep the bait in a good depth of water. Thinsg began very slow with the first possible bite turning out to be weed. We found that there was a bit of it around but not so much that it caused problems.

Eventually the bites began and my first fish was a small bass. It gave a strong pull on the rod tip every few seconds and I think it had hooked itself. It was q while after casting out too which indicated they were close in again. Chris soon began getting bites too and I missed the next couple that I was sure were dogfish before landing 3 over the next 45 minutes, which were all after the tide had turned.

I had a period of half an hour with no bites but Chris was still getting some and by now had more fish that me. I then had another Bass which took my bait within a few seconds of casting out, I could feel the fish taking the bait as I was walking back with my rod. By tihis time Chris had had a small Ray and a small Conger eel and Bass, so I was becoming hopeful that we might still catch a decent sized Ray, or more species before we packed up.

That was it for me though. I had a few more bites, which were dogfish that I missed or bumped off. In the end Chris had 4 species and I had the 2. We packed up later than I would have done so if I''d been on my own and I was glad we stuck it out a bit longer than I would have. I think my sessions here usually result in the bites coming up to and until just after low tide, so to get one where we probably could have still caught had we not needed to pack up was encouraging enough to make me consider the beach will produce outside of the commonly receommended window, 2 down, 2 up.

We were both fairly happy with the session, well I certainly was glad to see a Ray and a few Bass in one session isn''t too bad either. I don''t often ledger on weekday nights, preferring to have quick float and feathering sessions, but I''m considering making the effort to do a few more over the summer.
