The Session: I fished with 3 other people, two who I have fished with before. I set up two legder rods and a rod for mackerel feathering to try and get some to use as bait and freeze at home. Over the session I switched both of the main ledger rods between squid, sandeel and crab and I cast them both around 70 yards to begin with before trying shorter casts of down to 20 yards, after dark. I barely had a bite and my baits were coming back mostly untouched and occasionally only slightly eaten.

Once darkness fell I set up a rod to put a mackerel head on to try for a conger eel or bass, or maybe a ray. This came back untouched when I checked it three times over two hours. When I changed it to a mackerel tail there was a moment that I thought the rod was showing signs of the bait being touched. I had it set down in a drainpipe I had made into a sand ''spike'' and so it was standing vertically and waving back and forth a little at this time. Eventually it stopped and when I reeled in the tail it was stripped down to the bone by crabs. I changed it to a head and cast it further out for the remainder of the session.

The other people I was with were getting bites now and again, mostly from small fish but the best being a double figure Bull Huss from the person who was newest to sea fishing, which had us all pleased for him. We were all within a 100 yard stretch so it was odd I was the only one not getting any bites, especially as I was trying baits the others were also using. It was good to fish with other people again though and we had some good chats, which passed the time.

Two left at around 1am and the other two of us gave it a while longer before packing up and leaving around 2am. Although it was a poor session it wasn''t my worst there but I wished I''d caught a few more mackerel to take home that would have covered fuel costs.
