The Session:

It had been a while since I fished here and last time was with a group who all did a bit better than I did. I was in a different spot but still on the main beach. It was the first area I saw where I could comfortably set up with ample room between myself and the anglers who were either side of me.

I set up my two main ledger rods and cast the one baited with sandeel around 80 yards straight out and followed that with a 2 hook flapper rig cast around 60 yards. I think one of the ragworm flew off the hook on this first cast as it was a bit of an untidy cast.

My plan was to then catch some mackerel to take home and to use for bait so I set up a feathering rod and had some casts with that inbetween recasting my ledger rods. It took a lot of casts before I had any mackerel but finally I got one and then half an hour later I had another. They were both over the legal size limit but still small so I opted to stick with the sandeel for bait and keep the mackerel for float or Conger Eel fishing from my local pier. I hadn't had a single bite on the sandeel, nor any sign of crabs taking the bait and the ragworm was coming back only occasionally touched by something so I was hoping it would pick up after dark a bit.

Eventually I began to get some bites on the ragworm but they were hard to connect with and when I finally did, it was revealed why; they were small Pouting. I hooked just a couple by 9pm when I had two on one cast. The wind began picking up a bit which was not forecast and as I checked the sky it looked rather black in most directions so given the lack of bites on the large bait and the possibility of rain or a storm I decided to pack up and try and make better use of the ragwom the next day.
