The Session:

This was a meet-up with 3 other anglers. I arrived at around 5pm and set up my two ledger rods first. I cast them both straight out to a distance of around 70 yards. Over the session I made a few shorter casts down to around 40 yards.

It was slow for all of us to begin with, but Bob managed to get the first fish which was a small Bass. I had brought frozen Mackerel with me but I thought I'd have a go for some with feathers to get some fresh bait. Other people were feathering along the beach but we saw no-one catching any. After several casts I hooked one Mackerel and I took it straight to my tackle and went straight back, hoping that I could get at least one fresh fish for us all. This one was quite big too, looking like it was 1lb.

After a few more casts I hooked another. It was smaller but still of taking size. Whereas the first one took after about 5 pulls from a 70 yard cast, this one took after just two pulls. As the rods weren't busy I continued until the light started to fade when I hooked another one but gave up trying for any more as the others had just started to get more bites. I offered the mackerel to the others and two of them accepted one for bait. I continued with my sandeel and crab baits for the time being until John had a small but welcome ray of a few pounds and then Paul had a larger one which was a personal best for him. I decided to try fresh Mackerel myself then.

Typically for my luck when I started getting bites on this I missed the first few and then when I did hook one it was a Dogfish and sadly that was it for me, the bites continued but I failed to hook anything else. Sometimes the way the rigs came back implied I was getting Conger Eels taking the bait and John had had had some small ones.

The end result was just one fish on the ledger rods to me and Bob, with John and Paul getting a few fish each. It was good to meet up again but a few more fish would have been nice.
