The Session:

I made a decision to return to this mark after catching some Smoothound here on the previous two days. I set up around the same area and with the same setups, and peeler crab and sandeel again.

The sea and weather were a little worse than previously so I was unable to cast as far and so I felt that I would be relying on the incoming tide to have my bait in the deeper water.

As with the prrevious two nights the bites began around an hour after low tide and I managed to hook the first fish. It fought hard and I had to wade out a bvit in order to keep it from swimming along to where another angler was fishing, I finally got it to turn and come back towards me where I brought it further in with each new rolling wave until I was just able to pick up the fish while still keeping hold of my rod. It looked to me like it was the same size as the biggest one I caught on the revious night so I was a little surprised when the scales showed 13lb 6oz. This prompted me to hurry the photograph to put it back and get another bait out quickly.

It was the only bite for a while and I could see the other angler had a couple of fish so I knew they were still around. Maybe he was managing to cast further than me, so I felt I should try and wade a bit further to get the bait well beyond the forming waves. It didn't really pay off as I only had a couple more bites on crab in the next hour, both of them were ones I thought I couldn't miss. I hooked and lost one and missed the other. The sandeel rod showed a bite just before midnight and it came from a small Bull Huss. After another 2 hours of fishing the tide had come in a lot but I had no more bites I could strike at or that hooked themselves so I packed up earlier than I had planned. I was very pleased with the size of the Smoothhound I caught though and I will definitely be fishing the mark again.
