The Session: I travelled to West Bay to try fishing for the first time and I decided to give the harbour arm a go first before moving to the beach once it was relatively clear.

I used my usual float set up and went to the longer arm, noticing several shoals of small mullet around the harbour on the way. I set the depth to 10 foot and put on a whole ragworm then dropped the float down by the edge. Immediately I was getting very small pulls of the float and occasional bigger pulls where the float went right under. They were all difficult to hook, indicating they were possibly small Whiting, Pouting and pollock. I wanted to find out and so stuck with it for a while. I kept dropping the float down, let it drift to my right and then I kept pulling it back very gently so I would get a pull that would be times just right with a moment a fish took the bait. I wasn''t using very small hooks so it would be difficult but eventually these small fish showed how big their mouths were for their size as at first a Whiting, then a Pouting was hooked with the hook being right in their mouth.

Over the 3 hours I fished I walked along the harbour arm and tried varying depths, including going overdepth dragging the bait along the bottom with the tow. There seemed to be nothing but these small fish around though and so several of them was all I caught. I returned to my car at around 10pm, as planned, but stopping on the way to contemplate trying the right hand side of the harbour instead of the main beach to the left. I stuck with my original plan and decided to consider trying the other beach if I returned in the future.
